About the ARDMS

Applicants are required to pass two comprehensive examinations to earn the ARDMS credential. One of them is based on information concerning how ultrasound works based on the physical principles of the equipment. The second exam assesses both clinical and ultrasound knowledge and skills required for specific areas of expertise. These areas include neurosonology, obstetrics/gynecology or vascular technology practices. These are multiple choice exams.

  • The sonography principles and instrumentation (SPI) has120 items (2 hours) which assess practical, hands-on sonography skills.
  • The abdomen, breast, neurosonology, obstetrics and gynecology, and fetal echocardiography specialty examinations for the RDMS has170 items (3 hours).
  • The adult, fetal, and pediatric echocardiography specialty exams for the RDCS has150 items (3 hours) which includes video cases.
  • The vascular technology specialty exam for the RVT has 170 items (3 hours).
  • The physicians’ vascular interpretation (PVI) examination has 200-240 itms (4 hours).
