About the ASWB

The ASWB exams are designed to measure the minimum competency acceptable to practice social work within a given scope of practice. There are 170 multiple choice items given within a 4 hour time limit. Included are 20 non-scored "test" items.

The ASWB exams include the following categories which assess entry-level competence at that specific level of education and experience.

  • Associate/Bachelors: A basic test for social workers with a BSW and no post-degree experience.
  • Masters: A generalist test for social workers with an MSW and no post-degree experience.
  • Advanced Generalist: A more advanced test for social workers with an MSW and at least two years of post-degree experience in non-clinical settings.
