About the PMHN

The PMHN credential is offered to nurses who specialize in providing care to patients with mental illness. Certification shows they are aware of specific mental illness characteristics, monitoring patients, treatment effectiveness, and potential risks and side effects of medications and treatments.

The exam consists of 175 multiple-choice questions. 150 are scored items while the remaining 25 are used for pretesting purposes and not counted towards the final score. The exam focuses on characteristics of psychiatric diseases and interventions that are used. There are also questions pertaining to psychosocial issues, patient and family education, and re-assessments of the psychiatric patient.
